Customs Duty: Definition

Customs Duty, also known as Import Duty, is a government-imposed tax commonly found in various countries in the world. It is a fee commonly charged when cross-border eCommerce shipping happens. Taxing shipments that come from foreign countries are usually done by the government to

  • Protect, support, and prioritize local businesses from international competitors,
  • Control supply and demand of specific products
  • Increase local revenue

Customs Duty De Minimis Value

Whenever goods move across international borders, customs from the importing country (the country receiving the goods) charge the importer customs duties on the goods. However, if the declared value of the goods (the dollar value of the goods that you present to customs) fall under the de minimis value, then no duties and taxes will be collected.

The Definition

In simpler terms, Customs Duty De Minimis Value is a valuation ceiling or threshold where in a particular product or shipment requires no collection of duties or taxes and is therefore entitled to immediate release.

Why Does It Matter in eCommerce?

As an online merchant, being aware of Customs Duty De Minimis Value will make it easier for you to structure your pricing and budget your overhead costs. Countries that offer a higher threshold means that you have a bigger leeway since you can import more goods or source higher-valued items in a single shipment while still taking advantage of tax exemptions.

In addition to that, knowing the Customs Duty De Minimis Value of various countries will also allow you to have better customer support. How? With this knowledge, you can offer shopping carts that are designed to help customers to not spend above their country’s de minimis value. If not, you can, at the very least, educate them about potential fees they can expect at customs clearance, so you can avoid unwarranted reviews that talk of “hidden charges” when in fact, it’s not your business’s fault.

To help you out, we’ve updated our list of all Customs Duty De Minimis Value of various countries. Please note that data provided are from Global Express Association‘s October 2019 report.

To make things more convenient, here is a list containing all the customs duty de minimis value of various countries compiled from public sources online.
